The Latino population in Colorado is growing. According to the Colorado State Demographers Office, there will be a 154 percent increase in Colorado’s Latino population between 2015 and 2030. And by 2030, one in five Latinos will be 65+.

Latino Age Wave Colorado (LAWC) seeks to improve the lives of Latino older adults and their caregiving families so they may thrive in community. It is an initiative of the Latino Community Foundation of Colorado.

Using a place-based, systems change approach, Latino Age Wave Colorado works with community, care network and policy partners to advocate for improved care access and coordination for Latino older adults and the family members who care for them. We capitalize on the cultural asset of family to employ a Family-Centered Approach to Aging where all members of the family are considered caregivers and in need of appropriate resources and supports in caring for their older relative. This model is currently being piloted in Montbello, one of Denver's neighborhoods.

While Latino Age Wave Colorado does not provide direct services, it seeks to

  • Establish and develop relationships with local Latino residents to understand areas of aging needs and identify opportunities for service improvement

  • Establish relationships with local health and human service providers to identify opportunities to improve and expand service practices based on resident-identified needs

  • Serve as an intermediary between Latino resident leaders and providers so resident voices are integrated into organization and institution policy practices

  • Identify and foster opportunities for economic development based on community assets

We accomplish this by

  • Hosting monthly listening sessions with Latino residents

  • Partnering with and training local community leaders to connect residents with resources

  • Introducing Latino residents to provider partners based on needs identified

  • Training health and human service providers on how to provide culturally-responsive services to Latino families

Whether caregivers are family members, professionals, or supportive networks of friends and neighbors, we recommend this report on Caregiving for Metro Denver’s Latino Older Adults.
